When friends and colleagues ask how long I have been creating art, the answer is -- as long as I can remember. I suspect I inherited my passion in art from my grandfather who was a recognized painter in oils decades ago.
I have worked in various media and approaches, from oils, acrylics, watercolor, and papermaking, to printmaking. Today, I work primarily in acrylic on canvas and watercolor. But I can often be found getting out the big tubs to make paper.
Most of my works are objective in that they have some association with recognizable visual images of my past and locations in the 30 countries across 5 continents that I have visited. Frequently my works contain personal references to places that have especially impressed me. I start out with a memory, an image that helps me focus and begin a painting. Many of my works are based on experiences in SE Asia, Spain, and Egypt. And, of course, The Heartlands.
But at least as important as the objective subject matter are the formal elements of color, shape, line, spatial relationships, and textures. Certainly, all of my works are abstract to a greater or lesser extent, and all emphasize the qualities characteristic to the medium. I adapt to changes as the painting takes form, directed by both the subject and the medium.
I hope visitors will find my work enjoyable and rewarding.
