April Artists in Action

Our concentration of  90 artists at the Hot Shops has forged a truly unique arts organization, and the work they do enhances the vibrant arts community in Greater Omaha. Check out the impact some of our resident artists have been making recently!

Hibernate and Create Weekend Retreat

Resident artist Kelli Sweet’s goal is to connect and inspire creatives at the annual Hibernate and Create RETREAT hosted at the Hot Shops Art Center, now in its 8th year.

This year’s theme was a “Creative Picnic” with 36 classes from 24 regional instructors offered over the 3-day time period.  Classes ranged from glass bead making, wooden mosaics, jewelry making, fiber arts, painting, alcohol inks and so much more.  Kelli’s mantra is, “EVERYONE is creative, and creativity is defined by you!”  In addition to taking classes, there is a special option where participants can sign up for the entire weekend and bring their own creative projects to work on.

“It’s fun to see the enthusiasm and energy of the participants as they have time to connect with fellow creatives while working on their own projects, learning something new, or simply chatting at meal time,” said Kelli.

Next’s year RETREAT will be a “Creative Fiesta” on March 21-23, 2025.  Registration and request for instructor proposals will be later this year.  To learn more about Hibernate and Create visit www.hibernatendcreate.com

James Hermsen Receives Patent

Art and creativity come in many forms at the Hot Shops. We want to congratulate James Hermsen for being awarded a patent on his invention of the Surgical Loupes Head Strap! These innovative straps serve to alleviate pressure by effectively redistributing the weight of surgical glasses. James’ ingenuity has not only transformed eyewear for underprivileged and disabled children but now has also enhanced the comfort and functionality of medical professionals who administer crucial care.
