So much has happened since our last in-person open house in December of 2019. Thanks to our many enthusiastic (and recently vaccinated!) artists, we were ecstatic to welcome visitors back for our Spring Open House!
Safety was a top priority with masks and distancing. There were a variety of demonstrations in pottery, weaving, quilting, glassblowing, wood carving, metal and painting. Other demonstrations were converted to video format to prevent crowded spaces.
“It was great to have humans back in the building,” said Tim Barry, managing partner and artist at the Hot Shops. “Art is most powerful when it can be experienced in person. Screens can give you a taste, but they filter out so much. It was great to have people back to see what we do so they can experience our work in person – that is the best way we can share our passions.”
The positive feedback from our visitors and artists was overwhelming. Kindness flowed through the building. Smiles were hidden because those in attendance showed the utmost respect and care for each other by wearing masks, but happiness was evident.
Rebecca Miller and friend Stallone visited the Hot Shops for the first time. “I’ve always had a major fascination with how all of the beautiful glass work is made, and I was able to see it with my own eyes. That fulfilled an artistic bucket list item for me. I also have a passion with being behind the lens, seeing the work of these strong Omaha photographers allowed me to gain some new goals and insights when working behind the camera. The Hot Shops Art Center is definitely a second home for us now. To watch the artists do their thing was a form of magic I’ll forever be grateful to witness.”
Jennifer Young has been an artist at the Hot Shops for several years. She recently moved into a larger studio to accommodate her growing business and the classes she offers. “My favorite part of the weekend was just being able to see people,” she said. “It’s been so long since we’ve been in person. I absolutely love my new space and for it to be the first open house in my new space was awesome!”
Couldn’t make this event? The Hot Shops is open to the public seven days a week. Check the artist directory to find a time when your favorite artist is in. Then, mark your calendar for our Winter Open House, scheduled for December 4 & 5!
