Silenced: your comfortability is not our reality

February 13 - February 28

A group exhibition curated by Jada Messick

Silenced: your comfortability is not our reality; is intended to reflect and uplift Black American Art. Silenced calls for work showcasing the voices and stories of Black Art in our communities. Black history continues to be erased and through this exhibition we will recognize the absence of Black subjects through art and society. There is a sense of censorship in our community when our realities make viewers uncomfortable.

Silenced is influenced by the adversity of Black Omaha artists. From lived and shared experiences, leaders and art organizations are not offering opportunities to local artists or holding space for new art styles. Artists are getting their personal experiences dismissed and concepts of injustices aren’t being accepted. Members of the community use others’ art to benefit their own profit and collaborative projects are not showcasing proper recognition.

Silenced is to exhibit the work of Black Artists who currently reside in Omaha and surrounding areas. Messick is seeking artwork that has been misinterpreted, rejected and suppressed. The work should be provocative, political, humorous and reflect the essence and simplicity of Black culture in our community. There are no boundaries when submitting to this show.

Silenced: your comfortability is not our reality; invites artists working in 2D, 3D, and photography.

Location: Hot Shops Art Center 1301 Nicholas St.
